You could be right, I’ve got loads of 50mm screws spare from a job so I’ll screw it to the battery in that case. Best to be safe than sorry.

    No he didn’t.

No brackets, that’s what cable ties are for.

Had to buy a full timing belt kit which was annoying. I couldn’t find a decently priced IP belt kit that would arrive in less than 15 weeks or something daft and I already ordered the engine timing belt kit before I decided to go Tdi so I didn’t have the right IP belt, guide and tensioner.

The ECU, engine loom and cluster loom arrived along with the inner cv boot kits:

I think writing "something" is a good contribution. It adds a pub banter feel to the threads, a little humour and the odd tangent are all part of the exchange as it would be face2face. It can't all be an encyclopedic web guff dowmload or fact farts surely?

It’ll probably be lacking the oil squirters in the block. I’d gladly try though. Need to find a cheap 2.5 petrol. I started tentatively looking last week. I’ll find a mega cheap one.

Just imagine the sound of the thing though!

The Tdi airbox arrived from Reg today. I need this as the MAF bolts to it.

IP belt came but it was just that, belt only, I need the kit that has the tensioner and guide with it so I’ll have to take a proper look, a quick search earlier only found £80-£90 kits and I’m not paying that. I think my local factors might be of help here.

Got the little bit that screws onto the concentric slave cylinder for the clutch line.

Picked up the gearbox from the specialist. He said it was perfect and not worth even putting bearings in, this is the free box from Reg I picked up the other week when I ran some bits down to him. The box is the early type that has the extra cable from the linkage that lifts and pin/plunger thingy in the box to let you get it into reverse. The cable isn’t made anymore by anyone and I bet this has written off a few vans. There’s a guy on Facebook that rebuilds them but naturally keeps his cards close to his chest regarding modifying the inside but it’s so fucking simple it’s unreal:

And this is what it looks like after it’s been ‘machined’ (with a grinder): that’s it! The box now goes into reverse without the need of the cable so it’s just reuse the standard linkage. I thought the purpose of it was to stop you going from 5th to reverse as the ACV’s don’t have a push down shifter I’m told. Well I can’t understand it as the later boxes don’t have it at all and also with a pair of grips on the selector shaft, you can’t go from 5th to reverse anyway? So what’s the fucking point VW?!?!? Worst case, if it can go from 5th to reverse when it’s all fitted, I’ll add a little bit into the lever in the cab to stop it going in without being pushed down as my shifter does that. Easy peasey.

Got the clutch back with organic linings now. I’ve had more material added to it as the pressure plate has more metal available to it than the friction material so now I have a 230mm clutch. It’s also got more material on the inside and all of it contacts either the flywheel or the pressure plate so I’m living the dream with that. Also the material is better. To talk in extremes, the standard material feels like hard plastic whereas the new stuff feels like cork. Again, talking in extremes but I think of it like tyres, harder compound, worse grip. So I guess my clutch will wear faster than a standard one but I’m not bothered in the slightest as the mTdi made the one rated at 300lbsft slip so this should work better.

It’s the torque that kills them. Mine hasn’t got the horsepower as an mTdi as it will when the Tdi setup starts shoving power out. The 20vT in standard form should be okay as it’s not got a massive amount of torque being a petrol.

Talking of petrols, I’m thinking about getting hold of a T4 2.5 petrol engine to look at, I think turboing one of them would be a great crack if it’s possible. The engine shares a common block with the old Audi UR Quattro so imagine that in a van! I’m not usually a fan of petrols on these vans but……..Yes. Fucking. Please! I do would.

I dunno about an inspiration, maybe a good source of amusement? I could get on board with that notion.
