It's getting some love in the garage right now- cam belt and a service, everything else is A-OK! Not gonna cost more than 4k in total. I'm very pleased with it, and will be putting it through its paces 300 miles back home to Kernow on Friday.
It's a shame about the heater- 20 quid part but costs an arm and a leg to install so i'll figure out my own way. Got a little dashboard heater to help me get home and a cosy dryrobe thing. Any other tips for defog appreciated as that's the only real problem I'll be having- cornwall doesn't get that cold!

Thanks for all your help! Has made the whole thing much less stressful and I know I've always got a place to turn to now. once I get it back tomorrow I'll post some pics of the damn thing.

Maybe you're all getting old and grumpy. Can't wait to get stuck in with this thing.
Young and grumpy here! No denying it!

Congrats and loads of pics and info would be great.

You can do the heater yourself. It’s really not that bad getting the dash out and probably the easiest I’ve ever had out the T4 one.

I really think we’re at the point where there’s no good vans left and you’ll have to be seriously proficient with the spanners to do the work yourself. I think keeping on top of the maintenance on our very much aging vans is ESSENTIAL. Replacing them for something better is a minefield and almost impossible from what I’m seeing of the markets.

When push comes to shove, that's pretty much what I concluded when I was looking for one. However being knowledgeable enough to be able to distinguish between superficial surface rust and where the real rust prone areas are is another matter. Think front lower cross-member, inner wing below the air filter, sliding door step, windscreen aperture, (rear cross-member???), and (wait for it?), the front wheel arches and front sills where the scuttle tray water emerges from...

I'm sure that there are still some well maintained, cosseted, garaged vans out there, but they will be getting fewer in number, and will naturally command the best prices. Consider the prices of new T6 vans for example - starting at £26K and well beyond...

The other possibility is sourcing one in a country that doesn't spread winter road salt, but finding a RHD model may be a bit of a challenge. Shipping costs from Oz?

Niseri, I was going to ask whether you know anyone who owns a goat, and now see that you have indeed purchased the van, so congratulations, and a goat will come in handy

Please maintain a write-up and photo's wherever possible - always appreciated. Bon Chance.

Well thank you Jim and odd request, not personally, but if you're looking for a cornish goat, you know, the ones that stink and sound like crying children, I know there are a couple in the farm off packsaddle hill Penryn TR109ET- satellite image attached. I also think there may be some at Flicka.

Nice one. I assumed by the lack of mileage over the years that it would be stood with no test, Tested till mid summer? That gives you plenty a time to sort stuff out.On the road within your 4 grand budget, thats great despite my low ball valuation. Any questions just fire away, we'll all pitch in where we can and yes picture, lots of pictures.Enjoy.

Hi. I have a used r h d heater rad off of a van that I broke. Getting the dash out to do yourself is not too bad. Good luck with it. And don't forget the pics

Niseri - I found the hard way that it's worth using the correct Part Numbers, which can vary between and within years, and by engine type etc:

                  https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/t...r/tr/2002-230/

When spannering, the Goat is used for divination purposes when really stuck, and only as a last resort, to supplement the two manuals that I would recommend to you, and which largely complement each other's deficiencies: the Haynes, and the Brooklands. Try eBay?

If you do get stuck, let us know, and I'll explain further

It seems that whether you have air conditioning or not also determines which matrix version you need:

Another possibility Hans, might be to have your existing matrix re-cored at a radiator specialist? I've used this outfit a couple of times:

Got it got it. Yeah it was a LHD one I was looking at, assumed RHD would be the same. the little dashboard fan thing I got gave up after 2 mins... think the input amps are too low
Gave her a bath today... had some primary succession going on on the roof!
Huskyman... where are you based? maybe I could take that rad off your hands?

                        All the best, Niseri!

I assume that this is the type of metal duct tape that they used to repair the paddles with:

Hi all sorry for the shocking delay in pics. Very well settled in with the van now, looking to find a pit or something at some point so I can get started with spannering. But she's running with no problems and being a charm... here are some pictures featuring dog looking awkward. WhatsApp Image 2023-02-01 at 18.08.35 (1).jpeg
