    Righto clutches.

6 hrs ago single mass was the way to go

2hrs ago I had to have a DMF instead

    Now I think I need a single mass 2.4 flywheel and a vr6 clutch

Unless I can find a 02g conversion anywhere.
Whats your thinking behind the above?

Old age and wisdom said "always bin the DMF"

The internet said DMF - because vibration noise etc

Someone on the internet made a point based on actual experience and knowledge and said - 2.4 T4 flywheel and VR6 plate

But then, as the box is coming out, why not replace it now for a stronger one rather than shelling out for a clutch then having to get an upgrade gearbox and another clutch to suit

      • Have you looked at the Volvo gearbox M56L2 if you're looking at the 02G, cheaper outright but I'm unsure what other mods are required.
I must admit I haven't looked any further than the price.

        • Surely the outputs will be in totally the wrong place? The T4 engine is pretty unique in being canted forward in the bay meaning the bell housing is nearly 45 degrees clocked when compared to the car gearboxes.

But it would be an option otherwise

But at £50-£100 for the M56L2 would that not be a good starting point to build an adaptor plate / adaptors and mounts?

The guy who bought JonR6's TT engined T4 went through 3-4 02B gearboxes before it was beefed up sufficiently.
He never responded to any gearbox questions, but there was mention of the specific weakness in his video blogs.
May be d-9 has something to add (he's running a 1.8T?).

              • My opinion on smf/dmf is that some engine codes run both over different years, when I was researching the ahu I couldn't find a definitive answer on whether my donor car ran one or the other. I know how much you love darkside, but the one thing that feels bloody lovely and works spot on is the clutch, so imo just go for a decent smf

                • Personally I don't like DMF's have done a few of clutchs with a solid flywheel kit and had no problems. Just a bit old fashioned me.

So what exactly are you now running Sausages? Supplied by Darkside? Those guys have really done some experimenting over the years and a very good sounding board.

                      • He has a standard hd clutch kit with scene tax and a stupid flywheel with no timing marks.

Techniclutch have been good for me In the past. Not found a flywheel yet to go with the fast road kevlar set up.

                            Yep I'm sure it does.

I'm just sceptical about any of these 'performance upgrade' items bought from online places like heritage and if they are actually any different from the same thing from a car parts suppliers - not sure they have the buying power to commission bespoke products?

                            • Trouble I had when buying it was the choice I had was darkside or non descript eBay stuff that I wasn't sure I could trust. Local motor factors were next to useless as per usual

                              • I've sent a few emails out to various users / T4 contacts running my maps. Zero have had clutch or fly wheel upgrades and reporting no clutch slippage or gearbox problems the oldest install being 20 months ago. Colin01332 has had the most powerful map with K14 install. Similar to yours New Reg, (other than using my OEM TMIC) albeit he's now reporting blowing & splitting cheap 2 ply ebay silicon hoses on mikalor clamps! He's running a rebuilt 02B, LUK clutch and DMF (done 2 years ago long b4 we met and installed tur bo and map) without slippage or failure. Reckons he wants to go a step further! So we're planning some upgrades in for next week. I trust his feedback as he's been a mechanic since apprenticeship at 16 & knows his stuff! "Just sh1t with electronics, sensors and 'modern rubbish'". Hmmm I've heard that somewhere else!?
