Pick up ring is just an aerial, it does not need to be matched. Keys have to be paired with the immo box. Depending on which version immobiliser it is, immo box may need to be paired with ecu, or any immo/paired key combo may work. Immo3 onwards needs the box paired with the ecu.

There's probably about 20 mm on the torsion bar yet so dont panic too much about your reverse raking you gurt fanny.

Not really sure what it means

However, whilst messing about with the chip loose in my fingers - it started and ran fine. Clean as you like, nice steady idle

With no coolant I shut it down again after a few seconds - except now it wouldn't turn off.

            pulled battery leads, still running

pulled the big round plug off and it cut out.

Could I get it to start again - could I heck, tried and tried and tried with the chip in similar position - nothing, just fires and dies on the immo.

            I've ripped the loom out.

Sometimes that's the best way - start again from scratch...

I've been checking through my loom this morning, familiarising myself with what's what, before feeding it all in.

Fingers crossed for you Reg! 🤞👍

Sounds like you've got it all there mate, that's close.

It wasn't really a case of starting again from scratch.

I know the loom works, I know I've got enough bits plugged in for it to run so I stuck masking tape on all the disconnected plugs then removed the loom.

Well I say it 'works', there's still the issue that it doesn't turn off on the key, the TPS (throttle position sensor) does nothing apart from read 14.3% all the time and there's an air intake temp sender disconnected somewhere (yet nothing on the air intake pipework to plug anything in?)

So - taking most of the insulation off the remainder of the loom, I pick out all the air con related stuff by following wires around the loom and if they go nowhere near the ECU then they are history.

Then turn to the unknown plugs, tracing them back to the ECU, using an ECU pin out guide to work out what their purpose might be and delete if required.

Somewhere during this stage I realise that the TPS and the MAF have the same plugs, one would sit inside the car and the other outside, one is dirty and the other is clean, because of the way the loom has run in the T4 I've had them swapped over all the time. doh!

I also found the air intake sensor plug which is down near the front of the engine - perhaps it's some kind of ambient sensor??

Bit more slim-fast for the loom

                  • Air intake sensor plug? Two wires, one goes to G1 other goes to G2? I've been puzzling over this very plug today - from what I can tell it was never connected to anything engine related in my golf donor. Was it just outside air temperature for the MFA?

Can't remember the fusebox locations, but the plug is a unique right angled two pin type that lives down by the circular multipin connector n the engine - an air intake temp sensor typically live in the air intake - this is nowhere near. Odd.

It still flags up a fault so should have been connected to something once?

                      Finished the loom tonight

Relocatd the maf wiring and then wrapped it all up - don't look like much but took a good few hours.

                      • If you give me the fusebox locations I can check my loom and see if I can identify it for you? The plug I'm pondering was the right hand side - air-box side.

                        • Intake air temp sensor is in the maf (usually)

                            Or the intake pipe.

I think it is part of the MAF in this instance.

I think the sensor down by the engine is ambient air sensor for air con and the wiring diagram has got it labelled wrong.
