Why not lift the step so the step edge covers the flooring edge - oem style.

Yes i am, i did convert it to slats a while back rather than flipping it over like i had it originally. I am moving it back towards the back doors a bit further (so having to take a corner off the bed to fit around the mouldings for the rear lights) but will still have a 190cm long bed and enough room to slide a bike or two in for trips without the bike rack!
