  • So I decided I needed to sort the rusty windscreen surround, and while the windscreen was cracked beyond repair anyway, whipped it out.

Oh and I've now got a garage I can work on the van in. Game changer.

Whipped the dash out while I was there. Any recommended things to do while I've got it out? I'm changing out the heater fan for a non-squeaky one. And I'm going to tidy up all the wiring as it's a complete mess.

Rust looked pretty bad on taking the screen out.

But once I'd gone round with the wire wheel I realised it could have been much worse.

Don't think I need any welding really. Might just put a couple of blobs down where the "lumps" have disappeared.

Next thing I need to think about is how to put some good base layers of paint down for the new screen to go in. I'm thinking 2k etch primer followed by a light 2k paint layer. Colour doesn't matter at the mo as I'm slowly building up to the full respray down the line.

New horn ring on the way as well as found this when taking the steering wheel off!

    • Perhaps change the heater rad while the dash is out. If it's being resprayed it's best done with the screen out. You'll be doubling up the work doing the rust then a respray later. Far better to paint while the screen is out. It'll never be "seamless" masking round the screen trim and once the screens in and right you don't want it disturbed a second time.

        • Ooo welcome back James! A garage is a real game changer. Mines just a lean to at the minute but even that’s been invaluable so far.

Have you had some heater radiator issues then Si?

              What's the typical lifespan?

              • No Jim but while the dash is out it dont seem a bad idea. Especially as they are not expensive. Says the man that fitted a dash to his doka without checking his.

                • I've been looking at the original 1974 version of Flesh Gordon, but can't see any yellow T4's in it at all:

Good point Si, I'll at least have a look at the matrix. Not too disruptive too I imagine, with it being at the top of the system.
