Turbo gubbins will restart after this short interval and information flash;
Changing the bonnet stay, to gas struts. Thanks to Hans (Red LHD EuroVan v6 150KW for the pics)
Here's whats needed per the VW ETKA catalogue;
1)7A , gas filled strut (L=285mm W=16mm Rod=6mm Force 300Nm Stroke 100mm) x2 , 7D0823359A
2)7B , clip x4 , 443823397
3)7C , bracket for gas filled strut x2 , 7D0823183
4)7D , ball stud M10X13 x2, N90966201
5)7E , hexagon nut M8.0 x2, N01100830
TL Darby in Burton-Upon_Trent quoted all 5 parts on a weeks lead time for £171
Volkswagen Commercial Derby quoted parts 2) to 5) advising that 1) the gas struts (no longer available through VW) for £59.88
So the gas struts are available from various outlets from £5+ each plus delivery , albeit they are not stainless polished units like Hans' OEM struts.
Third parties can supply the parts 2),4) & 5) for small change, the difficult one as info is unknown for making them, is the part 3) the lower gas strut bracket .
So I've ordered two pieces @ £15 each and will post up the sizes/drawing/pic etc in due course, for DIY builders.
I'm staying with the OEM design at the mo, but will look at the scrappers for alternative solutions and donor vehicles next time I'm allowed out by myself.
I've looked at the T5 and other gas struts but none are the 285mm length other than the Peugeot 306 boot lid type, but I dont know the stroke and lift value in Nm.
So rather than guess at an alternative I'll stay OEM, but watch this space.
Hans' pics to orientate the above diagram and location of parts etc.
