Slight clutch judder at top of pedal and it’s a converted panel van so how does this affect insurance? Finally it’s not been serviced or anything for a long time so I want to get it done and a new cam belt etc so can anyone give me a rough idea of price for this? We really like the van and it’s sound and not expensive have a look on eBay it’s in Exeter n51ndl is the reg Many thanks in advance Barry

What vehicle are you used to driving Baz? If it's something modern then it will feel heavy and slow - it's a 22 year old van.
Ask the seller if it's been registered as a camper - insurance should be fairly cheap depending how old you are/where you live.
For a service/cambelt change ask your regular garage for a quote, a few hundred for the service, couldn't comment on the cambelt.

    Check the MOT history...

Thanks a lot I currently drive a 2002 mk4 1.6 golf . I don’t think it’s been registered as a camper I’ve tried a couple of places one was declined tesco and admiral said they need more info. Did a compare one and it was about &80 a month so not cheap. Thanks again for the help

Ask the seller if it is or not?

Insure it as a panel van first, then get it reregistered. £80 a month sounds expensive - but it's all relative to age/location/job etc.

        Oh, it'll be a lot slower than a 1.6 golf... [emoji1787]

Lots of folk run vans still down as panels vans, myself included. shop around you'll find a deal. Cambelt about 100 quid plus the bits if done in a rural Shire on the welsh border plus the bits. Get a cambelt kit with all the bits and bobs. Not the fastest motors but the fun more than makes up for it.

Try Adrian Flux 1st then A-Plan for your insurance. There's a link on this forum for A-Plan but do your homework as they'll match your best price and understand vans and campers plus there's a discount being a forum member.

A 2.4 will be super reliable in standard form with just regular maintenance. It can easily be turbo charged for little money with plenty of forum members to give you guidance.

Servicing is cheap and again guidance available on here as how to's with lots of forum guidance if it's needed to avoid crazy garage hourly rates!

            Likewise belts and timing.
If you're prepared to give it a go there's support and motivation built into the forum membership or simple guidance on choosing a garage or managing them to do a good job!

Look forward to hearing more from you.

Thanks guys he is insuring it as a panel van only so I might have to do the same and look into reregistering later as suggested. Look forward to becoming an active member of the t4 community

                Welcome.

If you buy it, before you bling it up, make sure you do the cam belt and auxiliary belts.

What’s your location? I can recommend someone I use, in Plymouth

Hello and welcome, as above for the answers, these are specialist vehicles and as such you need to use a specialist insurance, personally I have never had an issue with flux and always a good price.
The 2.4 will feel slow though.

I recently had a new cam belt and water pump, was about £400 fitted, servicing wise air/oil/fuel filters plus oil change are all diy jobs, worth fitting a new aux belt if your doing the cambelt, camshaft needs changing every 100k, if you are doing all the service bits you may as well fit new glow plugs while your at it. Was the van cold in regards to the clutch judder, mine always juddered a bit till the vans warmed up. Speed wise worth checking if the throttle cable is slack, makes a big difference on the 2.4 if it's not tight, it will always be a slug though, the 2.4's are fine once you get up to speed but they don't like hills, the only real way to increase power is a turbo conversion, it's probably the best thing I've done to my van, completely transforms the driving experience! Costs about £600 for parts and a diy job, just make sure you've got a swear jar ready

                          Advice please

Like Big Al said, 2.4’s are slow as shit but will trundle nicely if you’re a sedate relaxed type of driving on the way to camping and then it probably won’t bother you.

Also worth noting there’s 2 timing belts, one on the gearbox end of the engine that just drives the diesel injection pump. I would be very careful to make sure you select a garage that has experience with these or older diesels as mine were both done by garages of the previous owners using tipex rather than timed up properly and that can cause all sorts of annoying issues. Poor cold start, economy, even less power than they should have etc.

Turbo conversion is always an option like Al also said. I bought mine reluctantly as I didn’t want a 2.4 as it’s for work (motorways, heavy traffic always loaded to the gunnels) and covers 40k+ a year but I knew a turbo would also be an option so I went for it then a few months later I turboed it and now I’m converted. The 2.4d(td) is, in my opinion, the best engine ever fitted to the T4.

Gets coat and runs from imminent incoming abuse.

Almost as reliable and powerful as the mighty 1.9td some would say.

Ah now Si you know I have both. And my ABL is Red and we all know they’re the fastest but the 2.4td is just simply epic. [emoji23]🤣
