  • Dad & Son camper conversion

    Hi All

As mentioned in the "welcome" section I've bought a 1997 Caravelle with the intention of turning it into a camper as a project with my eldest son Luke.

I bought the vehicle from a friend and have been trying to gather as much information as possible on the history of the van of which I'll post up here when I get photo's etc. As mentioned before, the vehicle was originally supplied with a wheelchair lift and then used by it's second owner to tow a race car trailer. The third owner converted it back to a wheelchair vehicle before my mate got it and was turned back to a caravelle!

So, having owned it for a couple of weeks and enjoying smoking round in it at weekends, we started removing the rear trim tonight with a view to start insulating at the weekend.

So trim removal last night and only one patch of welding to do at the o/s rear corner here the rear blower drain tubes exited.
One of the major plus points of this van is that my mate who I bought it off is a brilliant mechanic so structurally and mechanically on the whole,it's sound.Click image for larger version

Removal of the ply floor tonight and welding done Friday all being well.

I'll keep this as up to date as possible and any tips or advice gratefully received.

Oh, and if anybody is interested in any interior panels or seats, let me know.

I'm looking for seat and interior panels - bet you are miles away though.

Van looks very tidy - be good to see progress.

So tonight we got the plywood floor out and no real horror stories (phew)

Lots of original factory wax and the section that has been fabricated in to replace the wheelchair lift (whilst not pretty ) is solid.

I've a bit of tidying to do and remove the threaded posts that the seats bolted too but not a bad hours work and another step closer.
Hopefully get the new plywood floor in on Saturday so I'll update then. Thanks for looking and any advice welcome.Click image for larger version

              Quick update:

Welding done today at work ( Thanks Mal) and wheel arches lined and floor down.
I was made up with how straight forward the carpet is to fit, it really is brilliant stuff to work with.

Tomorrow is floor screwed down, insulation and hopefully start getting some carpet on the walls.

That's neat, still got to cover our wheel arches. I'm always getting side tracked.

                      Busy few days.

Insulation done ( no pics but you’ve all seen it before)
And ply panels and carpet lining done!

Vinyl floor is down too and I’ll get the roof panels and spot lights done before weekend hopefully.

I’ve gone with an MDF kitchen / cupboard set up but a mate who’s a joiner is going to laminate for me which has saved a few quid!

                      Here’s some pictures anyway

                      Thanks for looking
