I started it up this morning and the idle is all over the place and stinks of eggs. Iíve just cleaned the 3 elements/parts of the maf and run a can of cleaner through the air box and it now revs a lot higher than it was so a change is symptom so could point to the maf still I guess?

Stink of eggs not always a sign the cat is buggered or running too rich . The Subaru Legacy and the first Volvo's over here in the late 80's stank when being moved about the dealership when brand new.

Just a thought the new ones I referred to having been shunted about not getting warm perhaps the cat was working over time to filter the emissions. So if your lamda sensor isn't setting the lamda and C.O correctly that may be giving you the lovely smell. If you try a lamda get a Boshe or vdub one, not a cheap copy. Been there done that.

Cheers si, there was something else that made me think that, when looking at the values I think the lamda sensor was reading -32 may be a red herring of course...

That's it. There are always plenty of red herrings with that sort of work.
