Go get the proper tools and do it as FrenchDNA showed us how.

All that bubbly surface of barely touched tinworm will burst back into life inside 12 months - even with electrox

I think those patches will go to pinholes if you prep them properly - which means water in the cavities and rot spreading unseen - at least get some wax in there on a long nozzle

Oh - and don't spray up to a hard edge of masking if you are not on an edge or a seam - try to feather the spray towards the masking or it'll leave an edge, you only need to prime the nearly prepped areas after all.
      Fair enough. I'll try harder.
      Grommets ordered.

      • The grommet holes in the step always seem to be good places for rust to start.

The grommets fret the holes, wear the paint away and the rot sets in. It may be worth considering that once you have removed the rust and repainted the grommet holes that you leave the fixing out completely and fit the step down with a few blobs off silicone that will peel if required.

        • I need to start again. Proper job. Cut out and weld in new. I'm only down a can of Electrox and some labour.

Got some other front end mods to make too. Where do I buy the panels required for the door step cill? Recommendations please.

I'm off to fire the Golf up.

          • Looks good though Rob, I'm going to have to have a go at this soon as well.

Yeah my passenger door seems to hold water and then only leaks out of the door when I open it - normally over my shoes.

I think I need to replace my window seals to stop the water getting in in the first place.

            • Popped out to remove the bubble wrap cover I placed over the painted area last night. Old disk drive magnets held it all in place and kept most of the now regular rain and showers off to allow the Electrox to cure plus it bedded the tin worm in for the night! [emoji23]

I know I should be pleased as inaction was doing nothing but making it worse, but I don't. The remedy? The anticipation of listening to my mates sharp intake of breath when I ask about some welding..... followed by some piss taking banter! [emoji34]

              • I got the panels for our blue one from Central Panels on fleabay. All fitted well and seem good. Had their inner sill, outter sill and the little panel under the filler neck. Blimey its 12 months Saturday since we got the tub.

ID:	267948 Our inner and outter sill fitted a treat. Got these used wings the right colour. Wanted to do as much myself but Mol sent the mint wings, bonnet, bumpers and barn doors to my mate Deans body shop and i'm still waiting.Saw a blue bonnet on fleabay so tempted to get that and a front bumper then it would be finished and on the roadish.

                            • For years I thought all turbos were water cooled. The only ones I came across back in the day were on the L series Subaru. Quick car in its day but alas not as quick as the rust.
