    I'm glad I did pull these pumps apart. I wonder how many people buy a secondhand pump from eBay and simply swap them over? I've had these on the shelf for just two years and both were pulled off working engines.

    The control sleeve on the ACV pump was solid, the EDC simply could not of worked. It may have been run on veg oil too as the internals have "sticky fatty fuel" deposits in the body unlike the Volvo unit which was clean internally. The control sleeve was not free either but did move.

    See it all the time - 6 months with an open port is enough to gum these pumps horrifically - first to seize is the vane pump, but you cannot see it, a good (bad) indication of a gummed pump is a yellow brown residue and a sticky fuel spill collar.

    The number of people that decide they cannot afford to pay for a pump rebuild so buy a 'working' pump from eBay - guess how many of these 'good running' pump end up with me for a full rebuild.

    Got involved in an argument with an ebay seller a while ago - the pump he had sold was not just gummed but extensively rusty. He said it was running when it was removed a few weeks prior so I sent photos and he ended up saying that it must have gone rusty whilst in the post!

    Yep. As I suggested, I need to pull one of these pumps properly - is the governor solely electronic?

    I've developed a real admiration for these pumps and realise it's such a fine tuned piece of engineering balancing the internal pressures to deliver timed fuel as it does - it's quite fascinating and NOT for the faint hearted that's for sure.

    The governor is totally electrical. I'll send you a Volvo pump down when I'm back later in May.

    Nope - Don't do TDI, damn direct injection it's just a silly fad that'll never catch on.

    How difficult can it be - they are simple machines.

    Do you know of an EDC15VM equipped VAG model that uses the VP44?

    Scrap that, the pumps not as tunable as the VP37.

    A Lesson in Turbo Compressor Maps

    Pressure Ratio (y-axis) - The absolute outlet pressure divided by the absolute inlet pressure.
    Mass Air Flow Rate (x-axis) - The mass of air flowing through the intake/compressor over time. Usually lbs/min or CFM.
    Surge Line - The left hand boundary of the map, where the air flow is too low for the current pressure ratio. Blow off &/or Bypass valves are often used to relieve excess pressure to prevent sudden off throttle induced pressure surges.
    Choke Line - The right hand boundary of the map, where the turbo is approaching its flow limit
    Overspeed Line - The top boundary of the map, where the turbo is approaching its maximum shaft speed. Past this point, the turbo is liable to "overspin" and cause catastrophic bearing failure.
    Turbo Speed Lines - The lines of constant turbo shaft speed.
    Efficiency Islands - The concentric regions on the map representing compressor efficiency. The smallest island in the center of the map is the "sweet spot", or where turbo is the most efficient.

    Note: Some Garret & KKK compressor maps are written in m3/s @ 20°C which can be converted to lb/min using a conversion factor of 162.04.

    Just while I've got it open on my laptop , the Bosch Volvo VE pump uses a shortened cable with 8 pin EDC connector (7 pins used) and a seperate 4 pin connector (3 pins used) to connect to the older MSA12 ECU where as the AJT and ACV uses a long cable with single full 10 pin connector. Here's a few suggestions for VAG 10 pin connectors you could use to modify / extend the Volvos EDC.
