Don’t they all smoke when first started, mine does but soon clears.

Mine has a puff of black smoke sometimes.......... But mine is a 1.9td with extra fuel being pushed through.
I wondered when I did the mod why I didn't have any black smoke....... turns out not much of the exhaust was making it to the tail pipe.

Welcome aboard. I'd agree with RegCheesman - check the timing. If it's a little out you can make a modest change using VCDS in the Adaptions window. Also check the front belt tensioner on the diesel pump ensuring the arrow is lined up. They need a little tweek every so often. The ECU calculates the EGR as part of the fuel/air ratio so best to map it out then blank off.
