Turk, will you be incorporating any drl feature for the more modern look? I saw some really nice Land Rover spots that had drl halos that I think would suit the t4 a treat!! I think your lights look great and I don't what you think I'm knocking them in anyway.

          Yes I will Jonny ........

I'm planning in incorporating CCFL ( Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light ) rings. Other versions will have SMD LED's as DayLight Running Lights ( same as they use on Mercs and Porsche's ). That's the whole point in having bespoked designed headlights ......... you can have any option you want !

              Hi all,

As I mentioned the existence of a 'Pre-Order List' in one of my previous posts, I think it's only fair that I should post it here also.
If I could just point out that's it's not an official order list, but a list of interested members, members who would wish to buy these quad headlights when the prototype is completed. You can of course change your mind at any time. So if you weren't aware of this list, why not put your name down and beat the rush !

                    Hi folks .......

While I'm updating things, Here's what I've been up to in the last few days.

As I still haven't got what I would consider to be ideal conditions ( power wise ) for testing the headlights, and testing the fit to my van isn't quite there yet as there's a couple of things I need to do first, I decided to make a mock-up of the installation. First of all, I hooked-up a 12v battery to a 12v charger as this gave me the necessary 13.8v to my setup. What I wanted to test also was the headlight wiring loom that will be included with the quad headlights. So I had to find a way of duplicating the original setup that's in the van. What I'm using here is, my auxiliary fusebox I made last year ......... so I had to power-up the fusebox that incorporates four relays, four 15amp fuses, two diodes and a three-way switch, that replicates the high/low beam switch on the headlight stalk.

The 12v battery was my original plan ( that's why you see it in the picture ), but in the end I decided not to, as I couldn't find a safe way of doing it. A 12v battery may look pretty harmless, but done incorrectly can prove fatal ! a 12v battery can pack quite a punch .......... high DC current can kill ! So I decided to play it safe and rigged-up a 12v PC power supply, this gives me just under 12v @ 17amps ....... so just about enough to run the test .

Low beam - as setup only allows me to run the headlights at slightly below 12v, I'm not getting the full benefit of the performance of these Hella units. In reality you should be getting closer to 13.2v at the bulbs >>

High Beam - When you switch over to high beam, the low beams remain ON, this is only achievable via the diodes >>

And viewed slightly from the side >>

I'm sure from seeing these results you would agree that these quad headlights are really taking shape
I for one, am very happy with the way things look ........ and these can be better still ! in the next few days, I'll be mounting these to my van, then I can do some proper testing with the full 13.2 volts which is what we really should be getting at our headlights.

Until the next update ........ Thanks all.

Yeah, they got in early that lot ......... many people saw the potential of these quad headlights very early on in the project. They'll just have less time to wait till they get their headlights. Some may even get theirs before this Christmas ! Fingers crossed.

I think the work you have done is very clever, the whole concept is way beyond me. I have been reading through all the info but I hav'nt seen a price anywhere. Can you give me some idea so I can start saving. I have an R reg long nose synchro, if that's any help. Will you be making all the sets of lights. That looks an epic task. You won't be getting a lot of sleep.

It's just as well ........ us 'old folk' don't really need much sleep !

The quad headlight project came about purely by my frustration of wasting good money a garbage headlights that were ( and still are ) available for the T4. When I first bought my first T4 ( many moons ago ) ProjektZwo had just ceased making their quad headlights for the T4, I just couldn't get a set anywhere ........ not even a second hand set.

So I thought ...... sod that, I'll make my own ! how difficult can it be !?

So I posted my intentions on the other forum, then everybody wanted some ! There's definitely a market for these, so I spent the next couple of years researching, designing, fabricating ......... in order to keep costs down, everything would have to be done 'inhouse', just me, no middlemen. The whole concept is to make available to all T4 owners the chance to upgrade their T4's poor lighting performance. The T4 is a fantastic van, the actual design may be from the early 90's but it's by no means an 'old' or even 'retro' looking vehicle. Certain aspects need updating, like the comfort and maybe tweaking the suspension but apart from that it'll keep up with most modern vehicles. The only drawback I have ever found with the T4 is it's poor lighting. Hopefully I can remedy that ......... no more garbage DRL type headlights ! sure they look good, but the lighting performance is even worst than the T4's OE headlights

After researching headlight units ( bearing costs in mind ), the best undoubtedly were the Hella units. Hella make a range of 'moduler' 90mm units, specifically designed for kit car builders and track cars. As they're German made, the quality is superb and so too is the performance ........ and lets not forget, the price is also right.

As an ex retail manager and engineer ( and watch maker ), I knew I had the skills and background to make this happen. My plan is cater for most demands, people like to be individuals, they like their vans to be different from any other T4 on the road, some spend many thousands on their cherished vehicles, so why not design different versions of the quad headlight setup. Bespoke headlights if you like.

Here's what' on the drawing board -

The 'basic' version ( like in the pictures above ) .......... They're the Hella 'Classic' range.
Next version is the 'Permance' range.
                          And then the 'Premium' range.

And of course there's also the long nose version of the T4 that I've already made a start with.

                            Hi Turk

Are there likely to be any legislation issues with the lights - for MoT etc? Rough idea on price?

BTW - your inbox is full so can't PM you!

                            Cheers

Thank,s for the quick reasoning behind what you are doing, that I can fully appreciate. However you have missed my point. That was the price, I can see from what you say there is still work to do to perfect the long nose version but if I know the price for those you intend to be marketing by Christmas at least I will have as they say a ball park price. I don't expect you to be precise with the figure just a rough costing.
                              Leave it with you Turk.

                                Hi Martin,

No issues with legislation, so MOT compliant. I spent best part of two years researching such things, even if I had made just one set for myself it would of met all UNECE lighting regulations, no sense in doing things in halves. My motto in life is, if you're not going to do something properly ....... don't do it at all !

I've given up counting the amount of times I've been asked for the price for these ............ I really can't answer that with any degree of accuracy unfortunately, as it's still very much a prototype, I can only mention what my intentions are and what my goals are. Obviously the costs of the materials will have a major impact on the final price, my time spent making each individual headlight assembly is unimportant really, obviously I do want paying ! but it's not what motivates me. A top of the range good quality product is far more important.

But there is another parameter that makes a product, a good product ......... and that is it's affordability. In my mind there's no point or reason in designing and manufacturing a kick-ass set of headlights, with all the best materials and top of the range all bells and whistles parts, if nobody can afford them ! That's the main reason why I'm a one man band. In the beginning, I tried to involve some people in it's design, mainly laser cutting and profiling headlight brackets, instantly they were trying to fleece me ! all they saw were dollar signs ( sorry £'s in the UK ). If I had gone down that road I would have to be selling the quad headlights closer to £800 a set !

I therefore spent another year or so trying to find a way, that I could make all the individual parts at home myself. All this baring in mind that my goal was to sell each completed set for under £400. As it turns out, I now know that's not possible. You wouldn't believe how expensive materials are, it's all very fine if you're running a factory producing thousands of parts and buying materials by the truck load. But for an individual trying to setup a business at home, you have to make sacrifices else where.

Now, to answer your question on price .......... that particular prototype in the pictures, I'm calling the 'Basic' version as it uses Hella's entry level headlight units. May I also just point out that 'entry level' doesn't mean cheap and nasty as in Chinese junk. These are German made and of the highest quality. I think, the best you can get in that price range. I also know how much the assemblies will cost and how much materials should be required to make each and every set. So we are looking closer to the £500 mark. But don't forget, at this stage that is still very much a 'guestimate' !

Hope that answers your question on the headlights.

My PM box is now empty ......... apologies for that Martin, I hadn't realised we only had room for ten messages !

                                Anyway guys ......... Many thanks.
