  • BigBlue DIY build thread ......... 2.5 TDi 151bhp Long Nose MultiVan

Most of you already know that I already have T4, one of the very last ever made ! ( November 2003 ) 2.5 TDi Short Nose. Had 'Lulu' for almost 10 years now .........
love her to bits ! and she's only covered 64,000 miles ! >>

But then I moved to France, the RHD drive situation was getting unbearable, I had no option than to buy a lefty. So the decision was made to buy yet another T4 .......... why buy anything else !? And as I already had a short nose, why not see if I could get hold of a long nose ? easier said than done ! ......... these things are scarce over here, took me just over a year to find this one ! I finally managed to get hold of a nice German import .......... You can just see Lulu in the background, this was the day I went to see it in Clermont-Ferrand, in the 'Puy-de-Dôme' department in the Auvergne-Rhones-Alpes region of France, some 400 mile round trip. It's a late 1998, so model year 1999 Multivan. I know what to expect when seeing a vehicle that's covered 254,000 km ( 157,000 miles ) and is 17 years old ....... most other cars of that age would of been scrapped by now. But on seeing this van I was pleasantly surprised !

    So much so ........ I parted with € 9,500 ! >>

High on my list was the 'tailgate', I much prefer the tailgate versions as opposed to the 'barn door' versions. Very clean looking van, goes like stink ! It has had a respray, to the exact original paint colour so there's no obvious signs of that at the door closures. I'm not an expert panel beater and sprayer, but I do recognise a good quality respray when I see it. But you do have to be cautious with new paint jobs, as you never know what's lurking underneath ! >>

    Just a close up >>

And 'Lulu' isn't going anywhere soon, just couldn't bare selling her ........... so I'm keeping both of them ! >>

Really nice vans. The white one looks really cool, just the right amount of styling without looking over the top.

                          Thanks Danny.

My idea of 'styling' is a 'minimalist' style, so, no stick on chrome bits or fancy paint jobs .......... try and keep the vehicle as is, and just improve it's performance and road handling. Side by side you can clearly see the original standard height of the T4. I also went from 18" alloys with low profile tyres ( 45 profile ) to 16" Borbets with 55 profile tyres, but kept the front lowered by -60 and the rear is now -40 on Vogtland shocks and springs. So by lowering and stiffening the suspension on decent sized rubber, you do get a stiffer ride but with a tad of softness ....... best combination I've found that's for sure. I found that running 18" on 40 profile tyres was a very harsh ride. And by lowering and stiffening the suspension you obviously reduce the amount of roll you tend to get on any van, as they're high sided vehicles. She's got a nice rake on her with the rear sitting up slightly higher like that, but I do have to put a full conversion in the rear yet, so the rear will come down a bit more >>

Gives the van a very nice stance I think, not as clumsy looking as the original look >>

My goal for 'BigBlue' will be something totally different however ........ Tried as much as I could, I couldn't get a decent second hand 'Synchro', so my basis for a 4 X 4 will have to be the biggest engined T4 they produced. A 4 X 4 wanna-be if you like ............. pretty much like this >>
