  • Hello t4 nuts

Hi to all, thought I should join somewhere where I can perhaps pick the brains of more experienced nuts.
I'm on to my second t4, I think ive done it right this time. (my first being a basket case)

She's a 1.9 tdi and she has the blue 'i'

A little fast on tick over about 1100 rpm, but otherwise smooth. I'm hoping a good service will resolve the idle speed issue Also going to get the cam belt and water pump replaced.

Also a minor issue not being able to change from 5th to 4th (or 4th to 3rd) without a double dip. I'm guessing synchro, so replace gear box?

Would anyone know of any t4 specialist in Devon or Torbay / Plymouth areas? I would rather find someone who knows these machines.

Best pic I've got for the mo...

      Hello welcome and enjoy!!

If its a 1.9tdi its a retro fitted engine which is desirable for its tunability, it could be a 1.9td engine known as the abl (by far the best engine if you ask me te he) The blue I relates to a type of 2.5tdi engine so may have had a badge fitted? (Mine has a tdi badge but is there to the 9hp a badge is said to add lol

        Hi and welcome.

Have you got any engine pics? High idle sounds more like a mechanical pump setup issue to me.

My ABL has the same 5th to 4th issue. It does go in but you just need to take your time and not rush it or, pull it out of 5th slide it into 3rd then I can throw it into 4th as fast as I like. Like most T4 owners I only do 13 miles a year in this van so it doesn’t bother me.

Plenty more pics if you can anyway.

Ah be ya and a warm welcome from the shire. If its a 1.9tdi its a retro fit. The TDI badge will be a red herring, You gear issue will be the syncro and you'll eventually need a box rebuild. Our daughters bulked every gear.Geartec in Woostershire rebuilt it at a cost of 700 quid with the vat from memory.

In Plymouth, just do a google search for vw mechanics near me. It brings up quite a few decent ones. For yours, if it’s had a tdi conversion, Dan Mundays bus stop may be your best option.

                    High idle?

I'm betting it's an ABL (not TDI) with a rogue badge.

There's a bloke in North Devon who can set these motors up nice, he's rebuilt a few gearboxes in the past...although a fresh linkage kit and oil may fix the gearbox.

Photo of the engine would help, or see if a throttle cable is fitted to the injection pump.

                    Welcome!

                      Somebody requested pics? ..

And thanks to all for the info.

I would love to know what type of engine she has. I'm not sure if you can see the intercooler held down with a bungie in the pictures. That's pretty much the only slightly dodgy thing about her.

The van is retro fitted, r&r bed etc although the units are not right. And they look like regular furniture with a camper cooker and sink added. Heavy I guess. That's one job on the list. Also no leisure battery yet.

I do have a central locking/elec windows /alarm package on order. But dreading the challenge of fitting it. And a new diesel heater to fit.

Runs really quite smoothly even though the high tickover. With all the weight I might consider some kind of upgrade., just to give it a bit more power.

                      Thanks for all the responses

Edit: the last pic is my old van. She served me well, but I'll be selling her spares or repair just as soon as I can be bothered to do something about it

Thats the ABL (1.9td) if i'm not mistaken. They have the trottle cable routed a strange way, it usually curls around the top of the motor and the air intake looks non standard.

Funny you mentioned the air intake, I'm not familiar with turbo engines, but I was having difficulty figuring out where the air filter is. One thing is clear, the intercooler setup is not right.

Do they suck air in through the intercooler? Sorry to sound like a numbty, I understand na all day long, but never even looked at turbos before.

Yup you have a stock abl (best engine by far!!!) Can't seen an intercooler and the pipe between turbo and inlet manifold is not altered from factory, and I can't see anything that my 2002 abl doesn't have.
The egr pipe has been removed and blanked though.

The air is taken in via the airbox/filter then goes through the intercooler. Fresh air goes over the intercooler and cools the intake charge. Think of a radiator but imagine the air going into the engine as the water in the radiator. Others on here could give a better explanation in less words but i think i've covered it.
