19mm that’s what’s confusing me! The centres came off my dads T4. They’re loose and wobble. 200feet to the end of my road and they’d be overtaking me through the junction

      • Mine are held on with blobs of silicone adhesive, I let someone borrow my spare set of 19mm bolts, and I could only find some 17s to suit the merc steels. Yours should be alright with 19mm bolts??

They will go on and they’re neither easy nor difficult to get off again by hand but they do wobble about like they’re not going to stay on very well?

As much as it sounds like a total bodge, silicone may be the answer. I also considered something like cheap jubilee clips or dare i say it cable ties to pull the plastic of the caps a bit tighter onto the nuts. Maybe my caps are just worn but they were on tight on the std wheels. Fuck knows

          • Bought the latest edition of VWBUS yesterday. I’m not an avid reader and probably haven’t bought one for about 3 months. I remember why now.

It took me about 8 minutes to go from cover to cover to then throw it in the footwell only to think that was too good for it and launch it out the window into the skip. I missed first time which added to my annoyance and considered burning it.

There’s absolutely fuck all useful in there. The first whip of something interesting and you read on only to discover there’s zero detail. All you get is some shit back story from the people that reminds me a bit of the waffling bullshit similar to the likes of X factor wankers “my sisters, ex boyfriends cat died when I was 13 so please vote for me” just utter bollocks.

I learned this a while ago about the mag but figured that there could be some good adverts on there or new products that might be interesting but no, just nothing from start to finish. I won’t waste my time or money in future. I’d rather go swimming at Michael Barrymores or see how many bees I can fit in my foreskin than buy that shit again. .

I occasionally skim van magazines whilst in tesco whilst waiting for her to do her 'just popping in/quick shop/few items' routine.

That quick skim is enough to remind me why not to buy the magazine, pretty much 0 content, occasional nice pics, but no substance.

My wifes friend comes out to stay with us for short breaks etc and always brings me the two main mags (she works in a newsagents).
What with covid etc she now has around 25 waiting for me. I call it van porn.
You are right though, not worth the money if you had to pay for them.
I extract extra value by passing them on to a friend who has a t25/t3.

                  • For those not on whatscrap, I bust a steelie today. Lol no spare as I don’t have any big enough to fit over the bigger brakes I stick on the front so I had to borrow this sexy little number from the AA
I’ve been meaning to get a spare 16/17 steelie and I should pull my finger out now - but I doubt I will.

                        • How do you bust a steel rim you fecjking ape? That crappy bmw paint probably...

Dem AA rimz izz sik, blud.

I like how it was full daylight when you broke the wheel but fully dark by the time the muppets in the yellow vans turned up, usual rapid service then.

And you are a fool for not carrying a spare given the miles you do, people are often giving sets of T4 rims away on faceybooks.

By hitting a big ass pothole at 85, I was thrilled and surprised the wheel itself had stayed on. It’ll undoubtedly need tracking again now. Thankfully the air didn’t fall out immediately but it was still flat by the roundabout a mile down the road. My mate I was working with was needed to get back for his daughter so I was pressing on. God bless this new 5th gear. God damn British roads.

The AA took an hour to get there as I didn’t ring then straight away whilst I waited for my £1.99 JML forecourt type pump to do its magic.

A fool you say? Absolutely. I’d be ripping the living shit out of anyone else that didn’t have a spare. I’m going to pick up a spare 16 or 17” merc rim so it’ll do the front over the brakes or rear. I feel like spraying it yellow for shits and giggles. As it stands I haven’t got a spare big enough at the min.

                              • I’ve been neglecting this shitbox.

                                I’ve got:

1, Rancid mk5 golf alloy on still and not packed and sent off the banded for repair. Think it’s out of balance. It looks godawful.

2, drivers front caliper binding, brakes aren’t great at best and when it overheats (intermittent) it causes the van to shudder violently. I’ve ordered a couple of front caliper repair kits inc piston and they should be here tomorrow. Wont get time until the weekend though. Breakdown imminent.

3, rocker cover oil leak. Fairly substantial. Enough to coat the back of the van in the oily mist as it atomises when it drips at speed and stick to all the bodywork. Got new bolts with integral washers from VW as when I built it I used random M8’s and large washers that I presume aren’t pulling it down enough. The washers don’t seem up to it although doubled up. 2 minute job when I get time.

So it’s feeling a bit sorry for itself and it’s getting on my tits.

Also, I think the turbo is starting to clog up again as it’s sometimes slow to open the vanes but still does. I always said I’d clean it one more time before giving up on it. I have started thinking about getting the K16 started. For this I’ll need: a new core, a K24 compressor wheel and a friendly sheep shagging engineer.

Or, I have considered trying to go for a dual spring actuator. This would let the vanes open slightly at lower boost and then the main event later on. The reason I’m considering this is that then I wouldn’t get a huge lump of torque in one go and also, the vanes being closed as boost builds means that the engine/exhaust is being restricted which is why the thing goes like fuck when they open as it can flow and go. I think it would improve response too. Say open ever so slightly at 5-6psi and then fully at 14/15psi. It would take slightly longer in theory to build boost between first and second stage but in reality it would flow and breath better so would just produce more useable power between the 2.

But would I still get constant issues with smoke blocking the fucker up? Possibly. A wastegate is far more dependable for my setup. With a decent comp wheel on a K16 then I doubt it would produce much lag anyway as it would flow decent air even if it isn’t making that much boost.

                                Input welcome.
