  • Gearbox upgrade +

We are all quite familiar with the fifth gear mod - and it sort of works. But it's not quite right.

What's really required is a mod that would make all the gears longer/taller, less van like more car like.

Simple - fit a car gear box.

Except you cant - not with a diesel anyway, unless you go down the bellhousing adaptor route....

I've thought about this, and am still thinking about a six speed swap.

Meanwhile - I've a spare T4 and spare Seat cordoba gearbox in my workshop

What if you fit the car diff ration into the van gearbox - yeah that'll work....

    In theory at least....

Grab up my favourite new tool

Break the first gearbox in double quick time

With the second box going the same way as the first, there's no way the car diff will fit - well, it will fit, wont do much though.

Far too small to still reach the ouput pinion - not very strong either

The output pinions are different too -

car one is much larger 19T vrs 17T and seemingly a different pitch, the car pinion will fit in the T4 box. This means you could run the car ratios or you could run the car ratios and a different diff/final drive ratio (going from 17/84 to 19/67 would mean the revs that used to give you 60mph would now equate to 84mph)

Interesting, how would that effect pulling power on a hill and acceleration
