  • The one that had no roof no mot and was fit for scrap

so some of you probably know of this van im told its been around abit !

sometime last year on a very frosty morning my old man told me that after some drunken ebay bidding he had won a t4 wow i thought this will be a fun project.

so we pick her up, at one point in her life she was a high top but on the day we picked it up she had half a roof welded on and a large piece of perspex siliconed on over the drivers seats which leaked alot.

this is the first picture we took some work may have already started.

so first off no mot, lots and lots of welding various parts a windscreen later we get that sorted and shes road worthy, next jobs cambelt water pump full service, a new stater motor and ignition switch and we have a very tatty but mechanically sound 2.4d van.

so drive it around for a while then the dash catches fire !!!! the rear window heater had somewhere along the line been cut off and was shorting on the body and eventually melted the wiring from the fuse box and caught fire.

so fixed that and totally re did the dash at this point changing the colour to black whilst it was all out.

    on to the body work,

more welding filling sanding and primer and things start to take shape.

next the roof, this large piece of leaking perspex has to go so a very nice universal sunroof is purchased and fitted with once again more welding to make it fit water tight,

over the next 6 months of warm weather the paint goes on there are various modifications made new lights new wheels some decals window tints interior converted to a camper again with bed, fridge , two ring cooker loads of blood sweat tears and money is spent but its been fun ill let the pictures speak as i have probably missed alot of things out, just happy to have saved a van from the scrap heap or broken for parts weve been on a few camping trips and this week are off to brean sands touch wood she keeps going for a while.

mk5 golf 15" my friend had some going spare and it meant i could still use the original van load rated tyres
the vans pretty low so the ride is harsh as it is without large alloys on low profiles ha ha

Yes ive been looking at going down the 15" golf/passat route so I can use the tyres from my steels. Do you think I could use spacers on the rear with them Wheels?

pretty low mileage 140k miles but felt well over due on a service which i did glow plugs, cambelt, waterpump , had the fuel pump timing looked at the cooling fans didnt work which a fuse fixed and now other than a bit of a crunch from the gearbox in 3rd she runs well done over 1000miles so far

you would have to get some longer bolts obviously but due to mine being so low on the rear when fully loaded the rear arches would need flaring as they would rub if spaced
so depends how low you are on the rear tbh

I see what you mean am running coilovers that are wound right down with no shims so don't fancy flaring the arches.

That looks to have been great fun mate. We've hardly started ours but I've said to Mrs S49 i'd love to get an early one in really rough nick to do. Heres hoping.

That's interesting, been given a mark four golf with alloys, got the same motor as our 56 plate caddy but a six speed box so got a home for that. Will now look at the wheels in a different light........wonder what else I can cannibalise before I cut it up for scrap.

Mk4 golfs I think have a different pcd so wheels might not fit and the nice bit is sitting back now and enjoying the fact of bringing something back from the dead but at the time I wanted to burn the thing to the ground ,seized bolts ,multiple break downs all the usual t4 problems this thing has had them all and they have all been done in a time span of 8 months,

I really need this holiday away in it to make it all worth while

8 months? You haven't hung about then have you. Got ours in January done the motor and gutted the rear and that's about it.......its a long term thing.
