  • My camper / swamper / work van build

Right this is my record of my camper, swamper, work van build

Bought the old girl 1998 1.9td swb short nose 800 special in white back in June 2015. 144k on the clock, fairly good condition and a folder full of previous history.

My doblo had just dumped its gearbox and i needed another motor for work as well as get me round (only motor). Me and the mrs went to Vanfest in September 2014 to see what it was like (no intention of getting a VW at the time). Anyway had done research and found the T4 was in budget and fairly reliable long term compared to others i was looking at. Picked her up from Southampton and back to the midlands. On the way back i looked at the speedo, realising i was doing 55mph on the motorway with a huge smile on my face (must have been love).

Wont bore you with details but ive done a few things / done a few repairs in the past 8 months. List follows

July 2015 - new windscreen after i pushed the mirror back on and cracked the screen
August 2015 - removed the two captain seats and replaced with a double passenger (for the dog) and standard drivers seat
November 2015 - Cherry blossomed the cab. Worked well but the dog was scratching it so removed it best i could and going to try again soon
December 2015 - new starter motor
Xmas 2015 - new ariel, headlight upgrade loom & a set of DRL headlights (presents from the inlaws)
January 2016 - wheel bearings, drive rubber, bushes, two new tyres and some wheel balancing (van was shuddering)

    Next lot

I bought an ikea sofa bed for the grand sum of £10.50 from eBay. Plan at that point was to have a full width bed and unit against the bulkhead.

Next thing was the DRL headlights started to fog up after washing the van. The water went but left water marks on the inside of the lights. They went back to the supplier and they have sent me out a new set. They are at the inlaws as thats where they got sent. Picking them up when we head over there mid March.

So roll on to today, ive just picked up some square sidebars from near Gloucester. Im going for the swamper look so these will fit in nicely. Two coats of paint so far and a couple more to go on tomorrow.

Also today ive removed the ply in the back and insulated the sides with silver bubble foil. Tomorrow the roof boards come down so i can insulate the roof too. Decided not to go down the route of flashband like many have done. Its a bitumen based product and will go up in flames. If anything would happen and there was a fire i would rather remove the risk of the entire van going up in flames.

The ply removed today from the sides im planning on cutting down to fit inside the panels. It went straight across so there should be enough to cover what i want. Its not in the best condition but should do for now till i have the money for a full set of new ones.

Once the ply is on then i can fit the full length cupboard i got for a bargain price of £60. Its in fairly good condition, just needs a sand down and repaint. Also the top could do with replacing as it has some openers that will stop me from fitting a sink and hob eventually.

Pictures are coming once i figure out how to reduce the size of the pictures to post here.

Anyway thats it for now. Will post more as i get done

Done a bit more on the old girl today.

Firstly removed the roof ply and insulated that, ply back on now and lights hooked back up. Forgot to say before i replaced all the inside lights with LED's. They were given to me by the guy i got the unit off (which i will get a picture of soon). The LED's make such a difference compared to standard bulb.

Also have removed the seats out of the cab and given it a good clean out with cloths and soapy water. Haven't put the seats back yet, will have to do that in the morning then get the van loaded with work kit. Late start tomorrow it is then.

Anyway more picsClick image for larger version

As a moderator I felt a bit concerned that you felt the need to include not one, but two pictures of what can only be described as filth. In future can you PM this types of picture to me for my personal vetting.

Filth is a strong word isnt it for something readily available for anyone to buy in a standard paper shop. There is nothing on show, anything rude is covered as in line with law. Get over yourself, i haven't posted porn pictures

AND NO I WONT PERSONALLY PM YOU FOR VETTING !!!

Thought i had said why i posted the pictures of the papers. When i removed the ply i found these behind the ply, dating back from July 2003 when the van was just 5 years old. Still in readable condition. Funny thing was Davina McCall said she was fed up of big brother, cant have been that fed up as she went on doing it for a few years longer

                      Twas a joke......

You should have seen the 70's porn mags i found stashed under the felt in my house roof. They were a bit scary at first, but a quick rub over with immac and they were brought up to date.

Nothing done today however i got some pics of the units i grabbed at a steal price of £60. They have two rows of LED's that need wiring up aswell as the socket (which is £30 on ebay).

You can see the openings in the top which i mentioned previously. Am going to replace this with a solid piece so i can fit a hob and sink in there.
