I started it up this morning and the idle is all over the place and stinks of eggs. I’ve just cleaned the 3 elements/parts of the maf and run a can of cleaner through the air box and it now revs a lot higher than it was so a change is symptom so could point to the maf still I guess?

If it stinks of egg would that not be the catalytic converter ??

Would that cause the poor running? I guess if it’s blocked it could?

Stink of eggs not always a sign the cat is buggered or running too rich . The Subaru Legacy and the first Volvo's over here in the late 80's stank when being moved about the dealership when brand new.

The fuel bank 1 wotsit in my experience is usually oxygen(lamda) sensor.

Just a thought the new ones I referred to having been shunted about not getting warm perhaps the cat was working over time to filter the emissions. So if your lamda sensor isn't setting the lamda and C.O correctly that may be giving you the lovely smell. If you try a lamda get a Boshe or vdub one, not a cheap copy. Been there done that.

Cheers si, there was something else that made me think that, when looking at the values I think the lamda sensor was reading -32 may be a red herring of course...

That's it. There are always plenty of red herrings with that sort of work.

It’s such a genuine little car I can’t wait to get it sorted for her. I wet mopped it yesterday and it looks stunning. (I think).

17831/P1423/005155 - Secondary Air Injection System; Bank 1: Insufficient Flow
                        Possible Symptoms

                        Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active

                        Possible Causes

Fuse for Secondary Air Injection Pump blown
                        Vacuum Hose(s) leaky or collapsed
Piping between Secondary Air Injection Pump and Combi (Secondary Air Injection) Valve leaking
                        Secondary Air Injection Solenoid(s) faulty
                        Combi Valve(s) faulty

                        Possible Solutions

Check Fuse for Secondary Air Injection Pump
                        Check Vacuum Hose(s)
Check Piping between Secondary Air Injection Pump and Combi (Secondary Air Injection) Valve
                        Check Secondary Air Injection Solenoid(s)
                        Check Combi Valve(s)

                        Special Notes

On vehicles with rivets holding the plastic body halves of the Secondary Air Pump together check to see if the rivets are falling out. If they have fallen out or are loose you may be able to bolt the pump back together if the motor has not failed.

Thanks Rob, I’ll have a sit down and read through it all in bit, I know the secondary air pump works, I tested that through the code reader. I found one of the pipes hanging off of it and thought bingo but it’s still the same. Really useful info though mate, thanks.
