  • Getting the hang of this headlight stripping , 4 clips, a torx screw and two sessions with the oven at 80°C and the clear plastic cover is off. Just waiting for the rain to subside to offer up the clear lens.

Got half a dozen ideas so far.

    • What the chuff are you going to do with them? if you really want to ruin the look of your T4 just go back and buy the rest of the T5 to go with them

        I'm looking for a clear vision ...
Well just the lenses at least....
Maybe your advice was it - buy a T5! [emoji23]

Did you know there’s two types of plastics , thermo plastic and thermo setting , should keep you busy reaserching those two plastics tonight

              Yep.
I'm having trouble staying focussed, diverted by ideas for plastic!

When I was in uni , I spent a year studying engineering materials , felt like a year wasted at the time , as all I wanted to do was to be in the machine shop, I’m glad I stuck the 5yrs out in uni at the time and it’s surprising how much I remember , oh yeah ive just remember the 2yr science and engineering background studies , a right headache that was

The problem with plastic, is that it degrades - even worse when exposed constantly to UV.

There are all sorts of coatings applied by the big manufacturers to stop lights going yellow/cloudy. once they go you can mop the lenses to get clarity back but once the coatings have broken down its a near monthly chore.

Typically, the more specialist the plastic (UV resistant), the more difficult it is to form.

When I looked into building light units - this was the hurdle that made me give up. The best answer would be to buy light units with glass lenses but then you would lose the OEM look. This could be overcome by making surrounds that replicate original lines and could be body coloured or contrasting colour like black.

Here's the current plan for my swb AJT.
Use the T4 black headlight frame.
Use the reflector (as its metal) so cut the curved back out and bond a flat plate into the reflector face (it'll keep all the fixings / adjusters etc.)
Mount two lensed lights (2x 5" will just fit in the space but need to look at a design and lighting types , halo etc ) into the flat plate, make the fixings adjustable.
Might vacuum form a twin lens surround to match the van paint (rusty red / carbon / black etc to give it a smooth manufactured bodged like appearance and cover the fixings.
Vacuum form / mould using the glass lens a removable clear & smoked cover to keep the OEM look.
Match the "look" with an off the shelf indicator fitting for now.
                    What do you reckon?
I could adjust the lights individually plus use the T4 "system" for tweeking for the MOT.
MOT mate will help me set it up before putting covers over.

                    • Solar Panel Guidelines

I did some research last year for my portable solar system I built, this might be a useful guide to you?

                      My 5 simple rules of thumb for the optimum solar panel angle ;
                      1. Ensure The Panel Has Minimal Shading, it will have a noticeable impact on the overall generation of power.
                      2. Face The Panel Towards South (Facing East and West looses 15% of the Optimum Power).
                      3. Choose the Best Panel Angle, heres my simple panel angle tips.
                      4. Buy a simple compass, don't rely on your phone!
                      5. Its all about percentages to maximise the benefits of free energy!

                      WINTER
Your latitude + 15 degrees , so, if your latitude is 50°, the optimum tilt angle for your solar panels during winter will be 50 + 15 = 65°
                      SUMMER
Your latitude - 15 degrees, would be, optimum tilt angle on the other hand will be 50 – 15 = 35°.

This method will give about 4% better results.
                      WINTER
Calculated by multiplying the latitude by 0.9 and then adding 29°.So to requote the example of a latitude of 50°, the tilt angle will be (50 * 0.9) + 29 = 74°.
This angle is 9° steeper than in the general method but very effective at tapping the midday sun which is the hottest in the short winter days.
                      SUMMER
Calculated by multiplying the latitude by 0.9 and subtracting 23.5°. In the above case example, this angle would be (50 * 0.9) – 23.5 = 21.5°.

For angles during Spring and Autumn, just subtracted 2.5° from the latitude.
Fixed flat systems on average run 30% less efficient than a correctly angled panel at the UK's centre (Fenny Drayton in Leicestershire) at 52.5 degree latitude.

Latitudes across the UK as a guideline.
                      Orkney Islands - 59°
                      Edinburgh - 56°
                      Newcastle - 55°
                      Derby/Nottingham - 53°
                      Milton Keynes - 52°
                      Southampton - 51°
                      Isles of Scilly - 50°

Just a 100W solar panel can generate 70-90KW/h per annum in the UK with our climate.
