Welcome on the forum, yes don't go to fast in buying.... iff the car has mechanical problems... they can allways be solved... rust on the other hand....

Dad had a 1993 2.4d that's why I got a 1.9td

Mines 2.5tdi and I’m grateful for it. Think some people turbo the 2.4s but don’t quote me on it

Lets just pretend I'm an idiot. I've found a 2.4d which i think looks reasonable for the right money (and potentially well within my budget) - Is the non-turbo painfully slow or decent enough? Also, are they bomb-proof or more likely to bomb?

As bomb proof as the rest mate. Dads wasn't that slow to be far. People do like a turbo mind.

Mine just happened to pop up locally and my mechanic mate came to see it with me, told me it was the best condition he had ever seen and a good model, I had to buy it.
I was looking for a 2.5tdi but I like power 🤣
