  • Swapping sausages - TDI conversion thread

So in exchange for building me a roof I offered to do a TDI swap for Dave Sausages.

Easy job right? Lets hope so, I'll try to document the process here....

I'm an eletronics engineer, used to work for a world leading company designing looms for all sorts of vehicles and aerospace applications, I'm pretty particular about wiring - more than a bit of OCD related hatred for bodges/preinsulated terminals/scotch locks and other half arsed fuck muppetry.

This sort of shit makes my blood boil,

I'll definitely keep up with this, wanna see what's involved and if it's possible I can do it myself.

Sell my T4 ? I'd rather stick wasps up my butt !!!

                    Ta. Feel better now
I would love some banded wheels but I can imagine the conversation trying to get them legalized.

Why are your wheels like this?
I had them cut in half and a strip welded in.
                    By the manufacturer? ??
No. By a random man in a shed I met through the internet.

                    They just wouldn't understand.

We are lucky here, I've had no trouble at all, insurance companies don't mind either, and vosa have no regs against it. All I would suggest is using a decent welder that does it properly, I mate (also mate of Reg's) had a set done locally and they leaked air like buggery. I've had 4 sets done by Alonze and never had a single problem with any of them

Another option would be Extreme offset wheels, all sizes and styles chosen by yourself, and works out cheaper than banding

I am aware of them. Saw them in another post ages ago with the big fat American type tyres. This is the route I plan to take. Need to save up first and other jobs are a bigger priority.

Your wiring is a bunch of plop, the side light wires on drivers side were chopped right through - had you noticed.? Can't believe they ship them with that setup as standard, it's appalling and won't last 12 months in a UK climate.

As for the knocking noise, the sky high sump guard (ha ha!) was hanging off, the engine mounts were flapping around and the gearbox outrigger shaft was loose.

I was so traumatised by your wiring I wound your torsion bars up so now you're 'francis draking' like a mo fo!

Bit of a double edged sword this photo as I also get to annoy Turk with my concrete blocks

                            onwards....

Front end came off with the help of a grinder - front cross member and mounts are pretty damn rotten

What have I found so far?

Original glow plug circuit and two subsequent bodged in circuits - none of which work properly

Oh and the motor fitted is a DI (direct injection) engine so could be a de-turboed TDI or a non turbo version - in theory it could stay in situ and just have a turbo strapped on, oh and a proper electric pump.

Ha Ha! nice one clart. I'd disconnected the sidelights god knows how long ago because of an unlocated short
